CanaTico - Pizzeria Bar & Grill

Restaurant in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

CanaTico - Pizzeria Bar & Grill is a wood-fired pizzeria, bar, and grill in Surfside, the compact commercial strip that serves Playa Potrero. It sits next to Hotel Bahía del Sol at the Calle 911 corner, about 500 meters north of Super Wendy, in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste. Indoor tables, an outdoor patio, takeout, and delivery make it an easy stop whether you walk over from a nearby house or send pizza back to a villa after a day on the water.

Finding CanaTico on the Surfside strip

Playa Potrero’s restaurants gather in two places: along the sand and along Surfside. CanaTico is on the strip, not on the beach. The address is contiguo al Hotel Bahía del Sol, Playa Potrero, Surfside Calle 911 esquina, Provincia de Guanacaste, Santa Cruz, 50304. If you are already rolling past Super Wendy, keep going north a few hundred meters rather than turning toward the sailing club.

From most Potrero and Surfside rentals this is a short walk or golf-cart ride. Flamingo is a few minutes north by car; Brasilito is roughly a twelve-minute drive south through town. Golf carts are the local habit on this stretch, which is why a patio dinner here often follows a beach morning without getting back on the highway. From December through April the strip gets busy around dusk, so leave extra time if you are driving.

Wood-fired pizza and the grill board

The kitchen leads with wood-fired pizza and then runs a bar-and-grill menu: steaks, fresh fish, burgers, and share plates. That split is the point of a table here. One person can stay with a pie; another can order steak or fish without leaving for a second restaurant.

The board has also included salads, salmon, garlic shrimp with mashed potatoes, chicken fajitas, pulled pork nachos, and French fries. Starters have included coconut shrimp and calamari. Pasta dishes have included lobster pasta and Philly cheese steak Alfredo chicken. On the drink side, a virgin piña colada and a strawberry daiquiri sit with the rest of a pizzeria-bar list.

The name reads as Canadian-Tico, and the plates follow that mix: wood-oven pies beside steaks, burgers, and grill food. This is casual dining, not a tasting menu. If you are set on a particular fish, a lobster pasta, or a named pizza, say so when you order, because beach-town boards move with the season.

Patio, indoor tables, takeout, and delivery

Seating is both indoor and on an outdoor patio, with open-air dining part of the layout. Patio tables suit a hot Potrero afternoon; indoor seats are the fallback when a green-season shower blows through. Say which you prefer when you walk in, especially with a larger group.

Takeout and delivery are part of the operation, which matters in a town where many people stay in houses rather than hotels. A wood-fired pizza travels well for a short hop back to a villa; steaks, sauced pastas, and fried starters are happier eaten on the patio. When you order delivery, give a villa name plus a landmark—Super Wendy, Bahía del Sol, or Calle 911—because many Potrero addresses are still landmark-based. Keep a working phone number handy.

The strip is set up to serve Potrero and Surfside first. Flamingo is close. Las Catalinas and Huacas are a longer run, so treat those as sit-down destinations of their own unless a driver agrees.

When the kitchen is open

Two public calendars disagree. One has CanaTico open Monday through Saturday from noon to 10:00 p.m. Another lists noon to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and closed Wednesday. Call +506 6150 0994 before you make a special trip on a Wednesday or a Sunday. A second number, 6302 1919, also appears.

Noon to 10:00 p.m. is a beach-town window. You can come off Playa Potrero at lunch without waiting for a dinner-only kitchen, and you can still eat after sunset as long as you are not planning a late last round. High season, December through April, is when Surfside fills; earlier seating is calmer. Green-season weeknights are the easy walk-in window.

Building a Playa Potrero day around dinner

Mornings belong to the water. Playa Potrero is the walk-to beach; Flamingo adds the marina and a longer strand; Conchal is a short drive for the shell sand. Midday heat pushes people indoors or into a pool. Because CanaTico opens at noon, it can take that late lunch as easily as an evening pizza.

For a low-key night, swim late, rinse at the house, then walk or cart to the patio as the strip lights up. If you want a longer crawl, Surfside already holds Italian at La Forketta, a gastro-pub at Perlas, Nicaraguan-style tacos at Gritanga, the brewery on the main strip, bar food at The Shack, and Indian plates at Tandoor Grill. CanaTico is the wood-fired pizza and grill in that cluster, north of Super Wendy rather than on the sand.

Sunset on the beach is a different errand. Hemingway’s sits at the sailing club, The Beach House fronts Potrero beach, Las Brisas holds the north end, and Coco Loco is the Flamingo classic. Nasu, inside Bahía del Sol next door, is the other Italian-leaning wood-fired room if you are already on that property. Use CanaTico when you want a patio off the sand, a pie to share, or food sent home.

Breakfast can be coffee in Plaza Potrero or a pastry in Villaggio, beach until early afternoon, then either a late lunch here or a return at dusk. Keep some colones for the evening. Nearby sodas such as La Sodita and Estera Azul are the place for gallo pinto or a casado if someone wants Costa Rican plates after pizza.

Picking a pizza-and-grill night in this part of Guanacaste

From Potrero to Flamingo the choice is usually wood oven versus beach club versus soda. CanaTico is the first of those: a wood-fired pizzeria that also grills steaks and fish, with a patio and a delivery option. Stay here if you are already in Surfside and want pizza without driving to Flamingo. Head to the marina towns if views and a dressed-up dinner are the point. Walk to a soda if you want a casado at local prices.

Distance after the beach is the real filter. A golf-cart dinner works when you are in Potrero. Las Catalinas is a planned evening, with its own bakeries, beach restaurants, and hilltop tables, and it is a weak candidate for a Potrero delivery run. Huacas is the practical town for produce and hardware, with sodas and the occasional food truck, not a pizza destination.

Bring a light layer for the patio after dark and a way home that fits the strip—walking and golf carts are the local default. Eat on the earlier side of the noon-to-10 window if you have a morning boat or a drive to Liberia. CanaTico is the Surfside pizzeria-bar-grill for wood-fired pizza, steaks, fish, and a patio a few hundred meters north of Super Wendy: lunch after the beach, a shared pie at dusk, or delivery back to the villa.
