Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas
Hotel & Accommodation in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
A hillside hideaway above a walkable Pacific town
Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas sits on a hilltop above Las Catalinas. The town is a young, walkable community on Costa Rica's Guanacaste coast. Twenty-one individual villas make up the boutique resort. Each has a saltwater plunge pool and ocean views. The hotel is part of Relais & Châteaux. It also holds Two Keys from the MICHELIN Guide for hospitality.
You are choosing a small hillside stay, not a beachfront block of rooms. The Pacific sits below for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. More than 1,000 acres of tropical forest, hills, and valleys run inland. Those acres are used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Pedestrian streets, plazas, and outdoor living define the town. Cars stay out of ordinary movement through the village.
Check-in is 3 p.m. Check-out is 11 a.m. Direct bookings include a welcome amenity. Early arrival or a later departure can work when a villa is free. The office emails an invoice the night before you leave.
How the villas differ
Start with orientation, not square footage. South-facing Villa with Plunge Pool rooms look toward Sugar and Penca Beaches. They measure 67 square meters, or 721 square feet, with partial ocean views. Sunset Villas face west over the Guanacaste coast and the Catalinas Islands. They are 68 square meters, or 732 square feet. The pool terrace is set for evening light.
Villa Suites are 108 square meters, or 1,163 square feet. They sit higher on the hillside with larger terraces and more seclusion. Views look toward the coast or the islands. Choose a Suite when you want extra room without leaving the same plunge-pool format.
Every villa shares the same core. You get a private saltwater plunge pool, a king-size bed, and 480-thread-count cotton linens. There is a private terrace, high-speed Wi-Fi, and a minibar stocked with Costa Rican products. An in-room snack menu, safety deposit box, and Bluetooth speaker come standard. Toiletries are organic and locally produced. Daily maid service and a 24-hour concierge round out the stay. Local and international phone calls are complimentary.
The stay itself includes a welcome cocktail and daily à la carte breakfast. Valet parking and resort-wide Wi-Fi are included too. A resort fee adds a courtesy beach shuttle on request. You also receive a map to more than 40 kilometers of groomed hiking and biking trails that start at the property. Coffee in the villa and bottled water at the bedside are replenished daily. Evening turndown is available if you want it.
That same fee unlocks Las Catalinas Doorway. Center of Joy fitness-center access is included, plus two complimentary wellness classes each week. La Estancia farm tours, horseback riding, coastal walks, and cultural and culinary workshops sit in the same bundle. So do pickleball courts with social play and clinics, and tennis.
Sunset Villa and Villa Suite guests can add a specialty coffee station. A cooking demonstration of a Costa Rican dish and a mixology class are also available. Tell the team your preferences before you arrive so the villa is ready. South for Sugar and Penca. West for island sunsets. Suites when you want extra floor area and privacy.
Dining, the infinity pool, and celebrations
Four restaurants handle meals on the hill. An open-air rooftop, a restaurant, and event space gather around the zero-edge infinity pool. Elopements, weddings, intimate birthday dinners, and other private celebrations are planned around the couple or group rather than a fixed template.
Pick the space before you pick the menu. A rooftop toast, a pool-deck ceremony, and a villa-terrace dinner hold different numbers of people. The hillside is intimate. A table for close friends is a different problem than a larger ceremony. Time transfers and the beach shuttle so guests from Potrero or Liberia are not still on the dirt road as the light falls.
Arriving from Liberia, San José, or Potrero
Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport, LIR, is the closest gateway. The drive is about 45 minutes. Juan Santamaría International Airport, SJO, in San José is the longer overland option. The posted address reads from the soccer field in Potrero, 4 kilometers north, at Playa Danta, Guanacaste. GPS coordinates are N 10°28'43.4″ W 85°47'03.9″. The phone number is +506 2103-1200.
From Liberia, turn toward Sardinal. Pavement gives way to a dirt road that is best driven in a 4x4. After Potrero you pass a soccer field and continue toward Las Catalinas. The last stretch is unpaved. The resort sits on the hill just before town. Parking is marked near the Green House restaurant and Pura Vida Ride at the town entrance. From San José, the drive uses Routes 1, 27, 21, and 155 via Huacas and Brasilito. Tolls on Route 27 are paid in cash.
If you would rather not self-drive, arrange a transfer with the hotel. The village below is car-free, so you may not need a rental every day. A 4x4 still helps for independent trips on dirt connectors. Visa, American Express, Mastercard, Diners, and Discovery cards are accepted. Traveler's checks are not. Colones and U.S. dollars both circulate. Change often comes back in colones. Costa Rica stays on Central Standard Time all year. Spanish is the national language. English is widely spoken.
Building a day in Las Catalinas and along Playa Danta
Begin with à la carte breakfast, then head downhill while the air is still cool. The courtesy beach shuttle runs on request. Arranging it the evening before keeps a morning swim on schedule. Swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking are the usual first moves. Sugar and Penca Beaches sit in the viewshed of the south-facing villas. Diving and stand-up paddleboarding use the same Pacific stretch off Las Catalinas.
Dry season runs December to April. Days sit in the low 90s. Nights sit in the mid-70s. That heat is a natural pause for the private plunge pool, the zero-edge infinity pool, or a wellness class at Center of Joy.
Green season runs May to November. Days are a few degrees cooler. The forest trails pick up more color. More than 40 kilometers of groomed hiking and biking paths start from the property. Horseback riding and La Estancia farm visits make a slower inland loop when you want shade instead of surf.
Late afternoon belongs to west-facing villas and the infinity pool. The sun drops over the Guanacaste coast and the Catalinas Islands. Dinner can stay on the hill across the four restaurants. It can also drop into Las Catalinas, where shops, plazas, and other tables sit without car traffic. Pickleball and tennis fit the same window if you would rather play than stroll.
People staying in Potrero and nearby beach towns often treat Las Catalinas as a pedestrian outing. Leave the car at the town edge. Come up the hill for a meal or a celebration. A Liberia arrival can still catch a first evening on the terrace if the flight is not too late. The dirt-road approach slows after rain.
Season, packing, and booking details
Pack swimwear for the private pool and the shared infinity pool. Bring shoes that can handle groomed trails and a dirt access road. A light layer covers nights in the mid-70s. A 4x4 matters on the Liberia-to-Potrero dirt segment, especially from May through November. Carry a card from the accepted list. Skip traveler's checks.
Match villa orientation to your dates. South looks toward Sugar and Penca. West looks toward the islands. Suites add about 40 square meters and larger terraces, which helps on a longer stay. The concierge can time Doorway activities such as farm tours, clinics, horseback riding, and wellness classes. Coffee, cooking, and mixology sessions are for Sunset Villa and Suite guests. For events, the useful details are which rooftop or poolside spaces are free and how many guests the hillside can host.
Fold the stay into a wider Guanacaste loop by keeping Liberia as the air anchor. Use Las Catalinas as a car-light base. Trails and town work on foot or bike. The beach is a shuttle request away. Save longer excursions for the days you want them. With only 21 villas, lock the villa type early. That single choice decides if you wake to a beach panorama or a west-facing terrace over the islands.
