Casa del Sol Resort

Hotel & Accommodation in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Casa del Sol Resort, also known as Casa del Sol - Villas Catalinas, sits in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, diagonal to the soccer plaza at the crossing toward Playa La Penca. It is a villa-style stay with two-bedroom units, in-unit kitchens, and a shared outdoor pool, placed inside the village rather than on a remote beach lot. The draw is practical: Penca Beach and Potrero Beach are both a short walk, and the plaza puts everyday shops and meals within easy reach.

Two-bedroom villas and in-unit kitchens

Accommodations are two-bedroom villas and family rooms for about four guests. One layout uses a king bed and two twins; another uses two queen beds and a sofa bed. Interiors include air conditioning, a sitting area, a terrace with garden furniture, and a flat-screen TV with satellite or cable channels. Views look onto the garden or an inner courtyard. The property is non-smoking.

Each villa has a kitchen and dining area, with a refrigerator, microwave, stovetop, kitchenware, coffee machine, and washing machine. A dryer is also part of the setup. Bedrooms include wardrobes. Private bathrooms have a bath or shower and free toiletries. Floors are tile or marble, and a fan is among the room features. Free Wi-Fi is included in the units and in public areas. Cribs and extra beds are not available, so sleeping space is limited to the beds already in the villa. Children of any age are welcome, and the minimum age for check-in is 18.

A kitchen shapes the stay. You can keep breakfast and cold drinks in the villa and walk to the beach without waiting on restaurant hours. That helps on early Penca mornings and on days when a barbecue at the terrace is easier than a drive. Buy oil, salt, coffee, and simple groceries on the first afternoon so the kitchen is ready the next day.

Pool, hot tub, and outdoor living

Shared grounds include a year-round outdoor swimming pool open to all ages, a hot tub, sun loungers, a garden, a terrace, and an outdoor dining area with barbecue facilities. Pets are not allowed. Security includes 24-hour coverage, key access, fire extinguishers, and cameras in common areas and outside the buildings.

The villas are set up for self-catering rather than hotel dining. English and Spanish are spoken. A private host manages the stay, so it helps to know before you arrive who will meet you, how keys are handed over, and whom to contact if something in the unit needs attention.

Compared with a staffed beach hotel, you gain living space and a kitchen and give up on-site restaurants and a full front desk. The shared pool suits groups who want a swim a few steps from the door. Travelers who need a private pool or rooms facing the ocean will be happier in hillside houses or hotels along Flamingo Beach.

Walking to Penca and Potrero beaches

Penca Beach is the closest sand, a few minutes on foot from the La Penca crossing. It is a white-sand bay suited to swimming and water sports. Potrero Beach is the town shoreline and is also walkable. Playa Prieta is a longer walk along the same coast, and Flamingo Beach is a short drive. Beach access is part of staying here: you are not on the sand, but you do not need a car for a morning swim.

A simple daily rhythm fits the site. Walk to Penca in the morning, return to rinse off and eat in the villa, use the pool through the hottest hours, then go back to the beach for sunset. For a busier waterfront, boat trips, or a longer lunch, Flamingo is the next town south. Tamarindo works better as a half-day outing than as a walk from the plaza.

Potrero remains a small coastal town of local houses, a soccer plaza, sodas, and a growing set of restaurants. A café sits essentially next door. Being by the plaza means dinner can be on foot, which is useful if you prefer not to drive after dark.

Arrival, parking, and getting around

Check-in begins at 15:30. Check-out falls in the late morning, around 11:00 to 11:30. Free private parking is on site and does not require a reservation. A paid airport shuttle is available. Tamarindo Airport is the nearest airstrip; Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia is the main international gateway for Guanacaste. Allow extra time on the road, especially in rain.

Guests paying by debit or credit card should bring a valid ID or passport for the cardholder. Visa, Mastercard, and cash are accepted. A rental car makes Flamingo, Tamarindo, and inland day trips straightforward. Without a car, use the shuttle for airport days and keep the rest of the stay inside walking range of the plaza, the two beaches, and the pool. The route toward the sand follows local streets; it is easy in dry weather and can be muddy after rain, so light closed shoes help more than dress sandals.

Choosing a villa on the Gold Coast

Walk-to-beach villas in Playa Potrero fit families and small groups who want a living room, a kitchen, and quieter nights than Tamarindo. Two bedrooms work for a family of four or two couples sharing meals. Line up the bed mix with your group, and make sure the washing machine is in the unit if you are staying a week.

A short set of questions is enough: which beds you will have, whether the terrace has shade, the cost and timing of the airport shuttle, and whether beach chairs are stored with the unit. Count sleeping spots against your headcount, because extra beds are not supplied.

From about December through April, days are drier, beaches are busier, and villas this close to Penca book up sooner. Later in the year, afternoon rain is common; the pool, terrace, and kitchen carry more of the day, and a car helps for errands. Midday heat is strong in every season, so morning and late-afternoon beach time is more comfortable than noon.

A day built around Potrero

Begin at Penca while the bay is quiet. Swim, walk the sand, then return to the villa. Midday belongs to the pool, the terrace, or the air-conditioned bedrooms. In the afternoon, walk Potrero Beach, pick up fruit and bread in town, or drive to Flamingo for a longer meal. Evening can be a barbecue at the villa or a walk to a nearby restaurant, then sunset on the water.

With a car, that rest day pairs with a next-day loop to Tamarindo or a longer inland drive. Without one, two beaches, the plaza, and the pool are plenty for a short stay. Bring a passport or ID, the card used to book, reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag, and a water bottle. Leave pets at home.

Casa del Sol Resort is a self-catering villa base in the middle of Playa Potrero, with kitchens, a shared pool and hot tub, parking on the grounds, and both Penca and Potrero beaches on foot. Use it for sand-and-swim days in the village, then add Flamingo or Tamarindo when you want another stretch of the Gold Coast in Guanacaste.
