Curiol Hotel
Hotel & Accommodation in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Curiol Boutique Hotel & Lounge sits in Surfside, a quiet neighborhood of Playa Potrero on Guanacaste's Gold Coast. The grounds lie between Playa Flamingo and Las Catalinas and a few blocks from the beach, with mango trees, fruit trees, and garden paths around glamping tents, ranchos, and houses. It works as a small hotel for individual rooms and as a private venue when a group wants the whole property.
A base between Flamingo, Potrero, and Las Catalinas
Calle Mariposa in Surfside places you in a residential pocket rather than on a hotel row. Playa Potrero's bay is close enough for a morning swim, while Flamingo's marina and restaurants and the village of Las Catalinas sit on either side of this stretch of coast. Potrero remains a small town with markets, local kitchens, and a bay used for swimming, fishing, and boat days. Staying a few blocks inland trades an oceanfront terrace for shade, a lagoon-style pool, and a quieter night.
That mix suits travelers who want Gold Coast beaches without living on the busiest sand. It also suits a slower multi-day stay: beach in the morning, gardens at midday, and a short hop to Flamingo or Las Catalinas when you want a different shoreline or a longer dinner.
Glamping tents, rancho suites, and houses
There are more than ten rooms and a sleeping range of 20 to 32 people. Safari-style glamping tents—Mariposa, Simple Luxe, and Mango—sit under the mango trees as a jungle-oasis option just blocks from the beach.
Four rancho suites, Bribri, Boruca, Maleku, and Curre, are built with light, handcrafted materials: Caña Brava sugarcane-palm ceilings, rattan lighting, indigenous art, and custom furniture. Each has a large open-air bathroom with an open-sky outdoor shower, a Guanacaste-wood vanity, and a boulder-stone sink, plus a bar fridge and a covered outdoor living area with fruit trees and a hammock.
Casa Chorotega is a fully equipped bungalow for up to six people, aimed at families who want a self-contained house on the same grounds.
The Boho House is a three-storey house and the owners' home, sleeping four adults and two children. A main-floor king bedroom opens to a private garden patio, with a shared bathroom that includes a bidet. Upstairs, a large master bedroom has a wraparound covered and open deck over the gardens, a king rattan sleigh bed, a work area, a changing room, and an ensuite with a bidet and an expansive outdoor shower. The third-storey rooftop terrazzo is the house's gathering space for dinner and night sky, with waves audible from the nearby coast.
Guests in the house use the same lounge and lagoon-style pool as the rest of the property.
Choose a tent or rancho if outdoor showers, hammocks, and garden time are the point of the trip. Choose Chorotega or the Boho House when you need extra beds, a patio or rooftop, and more interior room for children.
Pool, lounge, kitchen, and guest services
The shared spaces center on the lounge and an oversized shaded lagoon-style pool. A poolside bar and commercial kitchen operate on site, and a sushi restaurant sits on the grounds, with dining in the restaurant or meals sent to a private room. Mixology classes are part of the lounge side of the stay.
Daily services include airport pick-up, housekeeping, high-speed wifi, and laundry brought to the door. The venue side of the business matters for celebrations: event capacity is more than 300 people, well beyond the overnight sleeping count, so a buyout can cover both lodging and a larger gathering.
Time off the property can be shaped from a single outing to a full itinerary. Local options include art and culture, surfing, diving, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, and nature trails. Pickleball coaching is offered at an affiliate site with eight courts; it is not a court on the hotel grounds, so build in a short transfer if that is on your list.
Arriving from Liberia and moving along the coast
Most visitors reach this coast through Liberia. Airport pick-up is available if you prefer not to drive after a flight. A rental car still helps for Penca beach, Las Catalinas, and Flamingo on your own clock. The hotel is not beachfront, so a short walk or ride is part of every swim day; many people then come back to the pool when the sun is highest.
Light clothing, sun protection, and shoes that can handle garden paths and sand are enough for most days on this coast. Howler monkeys use the trees around the tents and villas, and fruit and medicinal plants are part of the same gardens. Early and late in the day are the easiest times to be outside without the midday heat.
If you are threading a route from the Samara side of Nicoya toward Rincon de la Vieja, Potrero sits on the coastal road, not the fastest inland line. Use this stop when you want a bay swim and a night in Surfside; use an inland town when the goal is only to cut driving hours.
Fitting Curiol into a Gold Coast day
A straightforward day from Surfside starts at Playa Potrero or nearby Penca, returns to the lagoon pool through the heat, and uses the on-site sushi kitchen and bar so you are not in the car at noon. Afternoons can go to a snorkel or sail on the Flamingo side, a walk in Las Catalinas, or a trail inland. Evenings work on the property—the pool bar, a rooftop hour if you have the Boho House, or Potrero's small main street for another kitchen.
Excursions are assembled around your stay rather than run as a fixed daily program, so decide before you land whether you want a fully shaped itinerary or only one or two booked activities. Fishing, diving, and surfing are all part of this bay-and-coast cluster and can be arranged through the hotel or independently in Potrero and Flamingo.
For groups, match headcount to the room map first: a couple in a rancho or tent, a family of six in Casa Chorotega, a mixed party across tents and suites, or the full 20-to-32 sleeping capacity when everyone wants to be on the same grounds. Then settle meals, airport pick-up timing, and whether the kitchen and bar are what you want for dinner each night.
