Flamingo Sport Fishing

Tours & Activities in Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Playa Flamingo sits on Guanacaste’s Gold Coast, where the Pacific is close enough that a morning on the water can still leave room for the beach. Flamingo Sport Fishing is a Costa Rican-owned family company that has fished these waters since 1982, before the first hotels were built along the bay. The same family traces its knowledge to grandparents who worked in pesca artesanal and sold their catch to the co-operative in Playa del Coco. Today the operation runs inshore and offshore charters from Playa Flamingo with captains who are locals or who have fished this stretch of coast for decades.

Meeting at Old Flamingo Marina

The listed base is Old Flamingo Marina on Route 180, Playa Flamingo, 50308, Guanacaste. That puts you inside the harbor rather than on the open sand, which helps if you are driving in from Tamarindo, Brasilito, Potrero, or the hills above town. Reach the office at +506 8389 5962 or info@flamingosportfishing.com.

Four boats make up the fleet. One vessel described in detail is Guerrero del Mar, "The Sea Warrior," a 32-foot USA Blackfin with twin inboard Cummins 315 engines. It carries up to six anglers and includes an indoor cabin, bathroom, fighting chair, live-bait well, GPS and fish finder, radio and stereo, and Penn and Shimano gear. Boats are fully equipped, with electronics and tackle matched to the charter. Large cushions in the stern give people a place to sit in the sun or move into the shade, a real comfort on a bright Guanacaste morning.

Inshore and offshore charters

You can book inshore fishing, deep-sea offshore fishing, or a day that follows whatever is moving. Charters depart daily from Playa Flamingo. Half-day inshore trips include beer, water, soda, fruit, and snacks. Three-quarter-day offshore trips and full-day eight-hour trips include the same plus sandwiches. The onboard spread is set up for families and friends as much as for dedicated anglers.

Listed packages are a half-day inshore charter at $750, a three-quarter-day offshore trip at $1,000, and a full-day eight-hour charter at $1,250. Those are boat rates for a party of up to six, not per-person tickets. A couple, a family of four, or a small group of friends typically takes the whole boat. If your party is larger than six, send that number when you inquire.

You can fish for dinner, for a trophy, or catch and release. The crew works these waters on the order of two hundred days a year and will take you to the spots they know along this coast. The Pacific off Flamingo is also full of other life—whales, manta rays, eels, and crabs—so a run out of the bay is often a wildlife morning even when the rods go quiet.

How to choose a trip length

Half a day is the right shape if you still want lunch in the village, a swim on Flamingo’s wide beach, or an easy afternoon. Three-quarter and full days buy more time in deeper water and more hours with lines out. Families with young children often like the shorter inshore option. Anglers who came to Guanacaste specifically to fish usually take the longer run.

When you compare charter desks on this coast, the practical filters are who owns the boat, how many people will be aboard, whether food and drink are already included, and whether you meet at a marina you can find in the early morning. A bathroom and a cabin matter on a hot, lumpy afternoon. A six-person limit on a 32-footer works for a family; six large adults with full gear will feel the space. Smaller parties get more room to move and more time on a rod.

Decide before you book how many people will actually fish, whether anyone needs a calmer inshore ride, and whether you want fish kept for a hotel kitchen that night. Send the party size with the date. The office already collects it on the booking form.

Building the rest of a Flamingo day

Gold Coast fishing mornings start early, while the wind is still down and the ride out of the bay is kinder. Treat the charter as the first block of the day. After a half-day return you can still eat in town, walk the beach, or drive a few minutes to other Gold Coast coves. An eight-hour trip is the whole day; keep the evening light, especially if you are bringing fish back.

Route 180 is the road through Playa Flamingo. Give yourself extra time if you are coming from Tamarindo or from the Papagayo side. Village traffic and marina parking are the slow parts, not the fishing itself. Liberia is the airport most visitors use for this coast, and Flamingo is a standard transfer from there.

You do not need to provision the boat. Drinks, fruit, and snacks are already on board, and longer trips include sandwiches. Wear shoes that can get wet, a hat, and a long-sleeve shirt. Lotion that is not a spray keeps the deck from turning slick. A dry bag for phones and a light pair of pants for the ride in are enough. If you are sensitive to motion, take whatever you normally use before you leave the dock. The Pacific off Guanacaste can be glassy at dawn and chopped up by late morning.

Questions worth sending with the date

A short note with your date, angler count, and preferred trip length is enough to start. Mention whether you care more about inshore water or an offshore run, and whether you want live bait. If children or first-time anglers are coming, say so. If you hope to keep fish for dinner, say that too, so the crew can handle the catch in a way your hotel or rental kitchen can use.

Flamingo village is compact once you are back on land. Restaurants, the beach, and the road north to Potrero or south toward Brasilito and Tamarindo are all close. A morning charter plus an afternoon on the sand is a full Gold Coast day without stacking two big tours on top of each other. If you only have one water day on the trip, this is the one that needs the early alarm; save sunset sails and snorkel boats for another afternoon.

To book, use +506 8389 5962 or info@flamingosportfishing.com and give the date, the number of anglers, and whether you want half-day inshore, three-quarter-day offshore, or the full eight hours. The office can tell you which boat you will be on and where to stand at the old marina that morning.
