Gracia At Mar Vista

Restaurant in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Gracia at Mar Vista occupies a hillside above the Flamingo coast of Guanacaste, a few miles south of Playa Potrero and just beyond Flamingo village on the drive down Routes 911 and 180. It is the pool-and-view restaurant in the Gracia group, which also includes La Vid and El Garden. The Becker family runs the kitchens, with Chef Frankie at the stove, and they source most ingredients from a backyard vegetable and herb garden and from local organic farms. The room is open-air, the horizon is part of the meal, and the same property holds an infinity pool and a swim-up bar.

The hillside, the pool, and who it suits

Mar Vista is built for a slower stretch of the day rather than a quick bite on the sand. Couples can take a quieter corner; families and groups of friends share the same open-air room; long tables are set when a larger party needs them. Guests swim, order a cocktail, then sit down to dinner as the light drops over the Pacific.

The infinity pool is part of the visit, not a separate outing. Use it after lunch or before dinner, then walk to the table. Changing rooms sit next to the pool. A bathing suit, a towel, and a dry change of clothes cover both a swim and a meal. The pool closes when daylight fades, so a late-afternoon arrival is how to do both.

Rain does not empty the restaurant. The open-air setting is still used on wet days, which matters in Guanacaste’s green season if a hillside dinner is the plan and a shower rolls through.

Hours, reservations, and wine

The restaurant is open every day from noon. Dinner reservations begin at 5:00 p.m., and the last seating is at 8:30 p.m. For sunset tables and for groups, a reservation is the reliable path. Book on WhatsApp at +506 6110-1687.

Wine sits alongside the food. The list includes bottles that are not the usual coastal selection, and servers can pair a glass or a bottle with the plate. Cocktails run at the swim-up bar through the afternoon. A natural sequence is a drink in the water, then a move to the table when the sky changes.

Lunch from noon puts you in the pool during the hottest hours without waiting for the dinner window. For sunset, be on the property with enough daylight left to swim, then sit at 5:00 p.m. or shortly after.

Steaks, seafood, and garden cooking

The kitchen turns out steaks and seasonal specials from a short list of ingredients. Plates that have come from this room include Steak Diane, seabass, tuna, small-plate tapas, key lime pie, and pecan pie. The Beckers cook in the spirit of a home table and keep the trip from garden and farm to the plate as short as they can.

Steak and seafood are the anchors. Small plates give a table a way to share. Desserts have included citrus and pecan pies. Mention wine when you sit down if you want a pairing.

Gracia means grace or elegance. The three restaurants are distinct concepts under that name. Mar Vista is the one that combines the hillside, the pool, and sunset dinner.

From Potrero down 911 to the hill

From Playa Potrero, drive south on Route 911, continue onto 180, and go about four miles, a little past Flamingo. Potrero sits north of Flamingo; Flamingo sits north of Brasilito and Conchal; Mar Vista is on the hillside just beyond the Flamingo cluster.

Playa Conchal lies about four kilometers southwest, a beach morning that pairs with an afternoon on the hill. Brasilito, once a small fishing village, is the next town south of Flamingo and a common base on this coast, about twenty minutes north of Tamarindo. Flamingo has a plaza and sports venues roughly a kilometer and a half northwest of the restaurant. The peaks of Fila Guayabalosa and Cerro Carrasposo sit in the same hills.

A car is what makes this coast work. The 911–180 connector is how people move from Potrero’s bay to Flamingo and on toward Brasilito and Conchal. Mar Vista is a short spur off that line, which is why it works as a dinner stop for anyone staying in Potrero even though the hill itself is past Flamingo.

A Gold Coast day that ends at the table

One clean shape for the day is morning on the water at Potrero or Flamingo, or a drive to Conchal, a pause in Brasilito or Flamingo for shade, then the climb to Mar Vista around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. Lunch from noon is there if you would rather swim through the heat and eat on the property. Dinner at 5:00 p.m. catches the light. Last seating at 8:30 p.m. still leaves a reasonable drive back to Potrero after dark.

When you are deciding among restaurants on this strip, separate the beach places from the hillside rooms that offer a view and a longer meal. Mar Vista belongs to the second group. Choose it when you want a pool in the afternoon, a wine list, and a composed plate—steak, fish, or a spread of small plates. Choose a beach soda when you want something faster after a walk on Conchal or a morning in Potrero.

Group size and daylight change the plan. A large table should be reserved. A swim should happen before the pool closes with the sun. A dry shirt in the bag keeps the dinner hour comfortable. Dry-season afternoons on this coast are built for that sequence; in the wetter months the open-air room still holds, and the sunset may come with cloud instead of a hard horizon.

The Becker family’s project is three restaurants and a garden. Mar Vista puts that cooking next to a pool and a Pacific sunset, a few miles from Potrero and a short hop from Flamingo, Brasilito, and Conchal. Reserve the seating, bring the swimsuit, and let the rest of the Gold Coast fill the hours before noon and after the last plate.
