Gracia Mar Vista sits inside the gated Mar Vista community in the hills between Brasilito and Playa Flamingo, just off Route 180. It is the flagship restaurant of the Gracia group, owned and operated by Frankie and Stephanie Becker, and it is set up as destination dining: an indoor-outdoor room, an infinity pool, Pacific views, and an open-air dining area rather than a walk-up table on the sand.

Because the restaurant is inside a gated community, a meal here is a planned stop. You leave the beach towns, climb into the hills, and look back toward the coast. Parking is available, including free off-street parking, which matters on a hillside road. Mastercard and Visa are accepted. Tables can be reserved with a name, phone number, email, party size, date, and time.

Kitchen, garden, and the menus

The kitchen serves globally inspired, locally sourced dishes built around Guanacaste produce, fish, and other regional products. The team works with local growers, fishers, and producers. On the grounds, Jardin Organico is an organic hydroponic farm a few feet from the kitchen, growing fancy lettuces, fragrant herbs, and other soft greens.

Lunch and dinner menus are offered separately, so the midday plate is not automatically the evening plate. Vegetarian-friendly dishes, vegan options, and gluten-free options are available. If you have dietary needs, mention them when you reserve. Once you are on the hill, nearby alternatives are limited.

Ask what is coming off the hydroponic beds that day if fresh greens matter to you. That on-site garden is the concrete sourcing detail. Chef Frankie, who grew up cooking in his Sicilian grandmother's kitchen, leads private chef tastings with custom menus built around local ingredients.

Weekend lunch, dinner, and sunset

Casual lunch is offered on weekends. Guests can take in views from the infinity pool, and families with young children have a playground on site. That mix is useful if you are staying in Flamingo or Brasilito with kids and want a longer midday meal away from the beach glare.

Dinner is the more elegant service. Guests are encouraged to arrive for the Pacific sunset and a hand-crafted cocktail before sitting down. Last seating is at 8:30 p.m. In this part of Guanacaste, sunset arrives early compared with a city dinner hour, so a reservation is really a sunset-plus-meal plan. Build in time to reach the gate, park, and sit with a drink while the light changes.

Call ahead before you drive up. Plan around a noon opening and a last seating at 8:30 p.m., and confirm Monday hours and holiday weeks in particular. Drinks accompany lunch and dinner; this is still a restaurant with a last seating, not a late bar in town. If cocktails are central to your evening, ask what is being poured that week and what time they want you for a pre-dinner drink.

Private events, weddings, and chef tastings

The Mar Vista space is used for private celebrations as well as regular service. It is suited to weddings, engagement parties, milestone birthdays, chef tastings, business meetings, and similar gatherings. The format can include exclusive use, privacy, a custom menu, and ocean-view terraces for vows, cocktails, and dinner.

Private chef tastings are a hosted experience for a group, with a custom menu and service from Chef Frankie. If you want that format, you are booking an event, not a standard table. Discuss guest count, start and end times, whether you need the whole venue, and how extra cars and vendors enter the gated community.

The same restaurant group also hosts more intimate, casual gatherings at La Vid. Mar Vista is the larger, view-oriented option. For a small milestone dinner, an ordinary reservation may be enough. For a ceremony or a buyout, start the events conversation early, especially in the drier months when sunset tables are in demand.

Getting there and fitting the meal into a Flamingo day

Playa Flamingo and Brasilito sit on Guanacaste's northern Pacific coast, with dry-forest hills behind wide beaches and a marina. Mar Vista is not on the sand. From Flamingo Beach, Potrero, or Brasilito you will need a car, taxi, or prearranged ride. Do not plan to walk.

A workable day that includes this restaurant usually has three parts: beach or boat in the morning, time to shower and change, then the drive up for weekend lunch or sunset dinner. Catamarans and snorkeling trips leave from Flamingo; if you book a sunset sail, you cannot also take a hillside sunset table. Choose one horizon.

Heat is strong at midday, so weekend lunch with pool views fits after a morning swim. Dinner fits after a beach afternoon, but leave a buffer. Gated entrances take a few extra minutes, and last seating at 8:30 p.m. is early if you are used to dining late. Eat on the coastal clock.

Afternoon rain is common in the wetter months. An indoor-outdoor room still works when a shower passes, but you may want a light layer and a seat with more cover. From about December through April the coast is busiest; reserve if you need a specific sunset time.

How to choose a hillside restaurant here

Hillside dining is a different decision from beachfront dining. Beach restaurants give you sand and simple logistics. A gated hillside restaurant gives you elevation and a longer stay. Choose the hill when the meal is the event. Stay on the beach when you want to walk over in casual clothes and leave quickly.

When you compare this kind of provider, weigh access (gate, hill, parking), the service window (last seating versus a kitchen that runs late), whether children are contemplated at lunch, and whether the kitchen has sourcing you can actually taste, such as greens grown a few feet away. Ask whether lunch runs on the weekday you are visiting. Ask whether dinner is the service you want if you can go only once.

If you are celebrating, ask about private-event use of the terrace and pool area. If you are a couple without children, dinner is the closer match to the more elegant service. If you are staying inside Mar Vista, the restaurant is a neighborhood table. If you are coming from Tamarindo, the drive is a larger commitment and should be the anchor of the evening, not a detour.

Questions worth asking before you go

Confirm the date is open, especially Monday. Say whether you want weekend lunch or dinner, and ask whether the playground and pool area are available for your party at that hour. If you need vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free dishes, give the headcount with the request.

Ask how guests enter the Mar Vista gate and whether the host needs names or a vehicle description. Ask where to park. If you are coming off a boat, ask the latest arrival they can take before last seating. For weddings and tastings, ask about exclusive use, custom menus, and how a terrace ceremony lines up with sunset.

Bring a ride that will wait or return, a light layer for after sunset, and extra time. You do not need much else. Treat the gate, the hill, and the 8:30 p.m. last seating as real limits, and the restaurant becomes the sit-down center of a Flamingo or Brasilito day instead of a rushed add-on at the end of it.
