Hotel Riu Guanacaste
Hotel & Accommodation in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Hotel Riu Guanacaste occupies a beachfront strip at Matapalo Beach in Sardinal, Guanacaste, with the Pacific on one side and green mountains on the other. It is a Fun4All, 24-hour all-inclusive resort built for family holidays: dining runs around the clock, Splash Water World sits on the grounds, RIULand occupies younger guests, and the nightclub carries the evening. Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out is at 12:00. Reach reception at +506 26812300 or reception.guanacaste@riu.com. On-site parking is available if you rent a car for Playas del Coco, Liberia, or other Guanacaste days.
Rooms with sea, courtyard, and family layouts
Seventeen room types cover couples, families, and mixed groups. Double Standard rooms and standard doubles with courtyard view suit guests who will spend most hours at the pool, water park, or beach. Double rooms with sea view and suites with sea view face the Pacific. Superior family rooms with two bedrooms and a pool view give parents and children separate sleeping space. Connecting ocean-view doubles exist for larger parties who want adjoining doors.
Match the category to the trip. Choose sea view if the balcony is part of the holiday. Choose two bedrooms if children will sleep while adults use the gym or spa. Courtyard and standard doubles still sit a short walk from Splash Water World and the outdoor pool. Free WiFi runs throughout the hotel.
24-hour dining and the bar circuit
The all-inclusive plan operates 24 hours, with themed buffets, more elaborate menus, and informal service points. Seven bars spread different specialties and atmospheres across the property, including a swim-up bar at the outdoor pool. That around-the-clock service is what you use after a late landing at Liberia or when children eat outside adult hours.
On arrival, ask how the sit-down restaurants take names during your dates so you are not standing in a dinner line without a plan. You can take every meal on property. When you want a town table, Playas del Coco is a practical nearby town for a meal off property, and the Potrero and Flamingo beaches offer another shoreline for a lunch or sunset outing before you return.
Splash Water World, pool, and Matapalo Beach
Splash Water World is the on-site water park, with slides and a splash area that make the resort a practical pick for families who want rides without a separate ticket. The outdoor swimming pool includes a swim-up bar. Direct access leads onto Matapalo Beach, a dark volcanic-sand shore used for walks and time in the Pacific.
A simple family rhythm is the water park in the cooler morning, the pool or beach after lunch, and a rest in the room in the heat of the afternoon. The entertainment team leads daily RIU Fit sessions, snorkeling, and kayaking. Professional scuba diving operates about 50 meters from the hotel, so certified divers can add a boat morning without a long transfer. Water shoes help on volcanic sand.
Kids' club, spa, sports, and nightlife
RIULand is the children's program, with supervised activities for younger guests. Fun4All is the all-ages entertainment track, with live shows during the day. After dark the nightclub hosts RIU Party and the RIU Get Together Party, so the property stays social well after dinner.
Renova Spa is the wellness center for massages, facials, and a quieter hour. A gym, tennis court, and sports activity programs cover guests who want structure beyond the buffet. The beachfront grounds also host weddings and group events, with a specialist team for ceremonies, and meeting rooms for travelers who mix work with the coast. A hair salon and gift shops sit among the public areas. Pets are not accepted.
If you are traveling with children and still want the nightclub, split the daytime: water park and RIULand with one adult, spa or tennis with another, then a shared dinner. If you want a silent week without animation, a small inn or villa around Playa Potrero will feel closer to village life than this Fun4All format.
Arriving from Liberia and exploring the coast
The hotel is at Playa Matapalo in Sardinal, Guanacaste. Most visitors fly into Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, then continue by shuttle or rental car. On-site parking makes a car useful for volcano, waterfall, or town days. Diamante Eco Adventure Park is a short walk, which puts zip-line and park mornings within easy reach. Canopy tours such as the Congo Trail sit a few kilometers inland.
Playa Potrero, Playa Flamingo, and Playa Penca lie along the same stretch of coast and work as a half-day change of beach, with sailing and catamaran trips common in that cluster. Coco Beach is a longer run when you want a town stroll. Visitor numbers on this stretch often rise from January through March, with another bump around Potrero in July. Dates outside those peaks usually mean shorter waits at nearby parks and a calmer buffet.
Pack light clothing for humidity, a cover-up for the water park, and shoes you can wet. If you add Rincón de la Vieja, a waterfall, or a catamaran, keep those for the morning and come back to the 24-hour dining plan rather than compressing everything before the 12:00 check-out.
Shaping a few days around the resort
Day one can stay on property: breakfast, Splash Water World, a Matapalo walk, Renova Spa or tennis, then dinner and the nightclub. Day two can walk to Diamante or take a canopy tour and still return for a late lunch and RIULand. Day three can head toward Playas del Coco for a town circuit or toward Potrero and Flamingo for a different shoreline and sunset, then back for evening shows.
This format suits residents hosting visiting family and visitors who want meals, a water park, a kids' club, and the beach on one stay. It suits less well if you want to cook, wander a village at dawn, or skip entertainment. Before you book, decide whether you need two bedrooms, a sea view, or a standard double; whether Splash Water World and RIULand fit your children's ages; and whether a rental car is worth it with parking on site.
Sustainability work on property includes Ecostars certification, a recycling plan, water-saving equipment, information on local ecosystems and culture, and tours organized with local guides and businesses, which is the natural way to add one outing beyond the gates.
