Pacific Coast Dive Center

Tourism Service in Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Diving from Playa Flamingo

Pacific Coast Dive Center operates from Centro Comercial Arenas Local 1, next to the BCR bank in Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste. The shop runs scuba and snorkeling trips in the waters off Tamarindo and Flamingo, with Catalina Islands as a core destination and Bat Island among the other sites it promotes. It is a PADI 4-star dive center with more than 20 years in Costa Rica’s northern Pacific, a team that works in English and Spanish, and a mix of ocean tours, PADI courses, and Emergency First Response first-aid training.

The boat takes up to 19 divers and more than 15 snorkelers, with daily equipment checks and rental gear in a full range of sizes. Underwater groups stay small: a maximum of four to five divers with a dive master or bilingual instructor. Standard dive days include two guided dives at two different sites. Open Water divers remain around 18–20 meters (about 60 feet). Advanced divers who want a deeper profile should request it when booking, because that requires a private guide and an extra fee while the rest of the boat stays shallower.

Tours for certified divers, snorkelers, and companions

A two-tank scuba day includes all diving equipment except computers and cameras, two guided dives, small groups, and refreshments of water, cold tea, cookies, and seasonal fruit. Bring a bathing suit, sun protection, a towel, and cash if you want to tip or buy photos from the guides. Bags sit in a dry area on board. If you arrive with your own BCD, regulator, wetsuit, and fins, a $15 discount applies; the shop still recommends using its kit because it cannot stand behind the condition of personal inflators, clips, or zippers.

Snorkel tours use the same ocean operation, which is useful when a household splits between divers and surface swimmers. Guests who prefer to stay dry can book a Boat Rider seat for $50 plus Costa Rica’s 13% VAT and ride along for coastline and island views. Refreshments are included. Children under 10 need an adult with them on that option. A family promotion takes 50% off the second child under 12 when two adults and one child book together through the shop’s booking system.

The tour list also covers a scuba refresher, private diving, a private snorkel–beach–sunset trip, a private party charter, and private night diving. Staff photography is an extra arranged in advance, not a built-in package. Hotel-combo stays and couple-focused add-ons are available for people tying the boat day to a longer stay.

Discover Scuba and PADI courses

Discover Scuba Diving is built for first-timers and uncertified guests aged 10 and older. The day starts with pool training, then two open-water dives with a PADI instructor, limited to a maximum of 40 feet. The listed price is $195 plus 13% VAT and includes rental equipment, guides for groups of up to four divers, and the same onboard snacks. Pickup is earlier than on regular dive days so the pool session can happen first. You complete a medical statement and need to be in reasonable health; a doctor’s visit is required if anything is in question.

Plan at least 18 hours after diving before you fly, and do not fly the same day.

PADI training continues through Open Water, Advanced, and Rescue Diver, with the option to start theory online. After a try-dive, Open Water is the course that turns the experience into a certification you can use on later trips.

Shuttles from Tamarindo to Flamingo

A tourist shuttle runs a $15 round trip from Langosta, Tamarindo, Villarreal, Huacas, Brasilito, Potrero, Flamingo, and Catalinas. Schedules are approximate, so be at the stop five minutes early. That route is how a Tamarindo or Langosta hotel stay becomes a Flamingo boat morning without needing a car for a single outing.

Public listings do not agree on shop-counter hours, so use the pickup time on your booking as the clock that matters. Discover Scuba guests should expect an earlier start than two-tank or snorkel-only groups.

Fitting a Catalina Islands day into a Guanacaste trip

Playa Flamingo sits near Tamarindo, Brasilito, and Potrero along Guanacaste’s Pacific shore. A certified-diver day is usually a morning launch, two sites, snacks on the boat, and an afternoon back on shore. Keep the rest of that calendar light: no same-day flight, and a quiet evening rather than a long inland transfer. If only some of your group dives, put the others on snorkel or Boat Rider so the whole party shares the same hours on the water.

Match the product to each person. Certified guests want the two-tank day. First-timers want Discover Scuba with the pool session. Confident swimmers who do not want tanks can snorkel. Anyone who wants the scenery without getting in can ride. Useful questions at booking are how many divers will share a guide, whether Catalina Islands is the plan that day, and whether an Advanced diver on the same boat can be staged separately for a deeper dive. Pack your own computer or camera if you use one.

The shop posts conditions for sites such as Pailas/Sur and Clásico/Norte, where typical life can include reef fish, moray eels, pufferfish, sharks, and, on the northern/classic side, manta, mobula, and eagle rays. Wind and swell still decide whether a given morning is comfortable, especially for snorkelers. Night diving is a separate private booking, not an add-on you should expect on a daytime trip.

Professional and research diving

The same operation takes commercial underwater work in open water, inland water, and confined spaces such as tanks and restricted plants. Listed services include marine salvage, underwater construction, emissary installation, beach beacon buoys, inspections, submarine filming, anode replacement, and checks of moorings, chains, and related hardware.

Research support includes water sampling, oceanographic studies, pelagic and benthic sampling, installation of study stations, filming and inventory of species, species marking, bathymetry, cetacean observation, and internships for university groups. The boat doubles as a work platform for those projects. Leisure guests book tours; project teams use the reservations email or phone to outline the job.

For a stay in Flamingo, Tamarindo, or Langosta, assign each person the right trip, add the shuttle if you are not driving, arrive early, pack sun gear and a towel, and leave a buffer before any flight. That is how a Flamingo dive morning sits inside a beach week without colliding with the rest of the plan.
