Pacific Soul Sailing
Tours & Activities in Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Pacific Soul Sailing is a private catamaran charter based at Flamingo Marina in Guanacaste, on Costa Rica's northern Pacific coast. The boat is a Lagoon 450 named Pacific Soul, and each trip is customized for the group on board. Departures are from Flamingo Marina, with Papagayo Marina as another possible start. Guests staying in Flamingo, Potrero, Brasilito, Conchal, Tamarindo, Hacienda Pinilla, or at the Riu Resort can make a charter the center of a beach day or a longer run along the coast.
Private Charters from Flamingo Marina
Charters are private rather than shared ticketed cruises. The marina sits between Playa Flamingo and Playa Potrero, keeping the dock close to hotels and villas around this bay. Transportation can be arranged from Tamarindo, Brasilito, Hacienda Pinilla, Playa Conchal, Flamingo, and the Riu Resort, with the cost depending on pickup location.
Captain Mark reached Flamingo Beach in 1989 and started the sailing charter business in the area. He was a partner in building Marina Flamingo and later shifted from monohulls to catamarans, running the first catamaran charter in Costa Rica in 2003. That local tenure is useful if you want a crew already familiar with nearby coves, marina traffic, and seasonal wind.
Half-Day Morning and Sunset Sails
A four-hour half-day is the core outing, split into a morning sail and an afternoon sunset sail. Morning trips are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Sunset trips run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Both include sailing, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, floating noodles, sightseeing, beach combing, and time looking for whales, dolphins, and other sea life.
Mornings are described as calm, with emptier anchorages. Fruit and snacks are served on the way out, a meal follows time in the water, and the bar opens at the start. The afternoon trip uses the same food, snacks, and open bar, timed around sunset. That later slot leaves the morning free for Playa Flamingo, a walk through town, or a slower start at a nearby hotel.
Daily charters also come in 4-, 6-, and 8-hour options. Six or eight hours gives more room for a second swim stop, a real fishing window, and lunch without rushing back to the dock.
Longer Days, Overnight Trips, and Group Events
Eight-hour excursions are set up to range farther, with a departure time you choose. Overnight trips use the lower-deck cabins, so the boat becomes lodging as well as a day platform. Wedding parties and corporate groups book the same vessel. For a celebration or work outing, talk through headcount, meal service, and how the decks will be used so the layout matches the occasion.
The Lagoon 450 on Three Levels
The Lagoon 450 has three levels of deck. Up top, a padded area is for sunbathing, a hammock hangs for shade and motion, and a flybridge bench seats eight beside the helm. The mid deck holds the aft cockpit, a large dining table, lounge seating, drink coolers, trolling rods, and a BBQ. An air-conditioned salon and galley include a refrigerator, freezer and deep freezer, gas stove and oven, microwave, and blender. Forward seating and trampolines sit ahead of the salon.
The lower deck has four cabins. Each has a double bed, its own air-conditioning with climate control, natural light, and a private bathroom with an electric toilet, sink, large mirror, and a shower with hot and cold water. Systems on board include air conditioning throughout, a water desalination system, a 12 kW generator, a Bluetooth speaker system, twin diesel engines, and safety gear. An 11-foot hard-bottom inflatable with a 15 hp Yamaha outboard is included without an extra fee.
Covered space, a working galley, and private cabins matter in Guanacaste heat. Mixed-age groups often want a place to get out of the sun without cutting the trip short.
Snorkeling, Fishing, and Paddle Time
Gear on board includes snorkeling equipment, two stand-up paddleboards, a two-person kayak, fishing rods, and noodles. Snorkeling may be at local spots around Flamingo Marina or at the Bat Islands. Tropical fish, turtles, moray eels, and rays are the usual sightings when the water is clear. The stronger snorkeling period is May through mid-December.
Fishing is part of the charter, with tackle for trolling and for angling at anchor. Species in play include tuna (ahi), dorado (mahi mahi), wahoo, and snappers. The kayak is a short paddle on a day trip and more of an exploration tool overnight. Paddleboards can head to a beach or around reefs; overnight itineraries can include a quiet run up a mangrove estuary.
From Christmas through Easter, Papagayo winds blow offshore and can leave the ocean relatively flat while still filling the sails. That dry-season pattern is why a morning sail in January feels different from a snorkel-focused day in September.
Food, Drinks, and a Day in Flamingo
Half-day trips include catering from a menu you select, snacks throughout, and an open bar. Drinks listed include beer, wine, rum fruit punch, mojitos, margaritas, daiquiris, piña colada, chiliguaro, tequila, vodka, rum, gin, and cacique, along with sodas, water, and juice.
A morning charter returns around noon, which leaves the afternoon for Flamingo's beach, Potrero's quieter sand, or lunch in town. A 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. sunset sail works after a late breakfast and a swim, with dinner ashore afterward. An eight-hour or overnight trip makes sense when the water is the main plan, not a side activity between other tours.
Getting to the Marina and How to Choose
Flamingo Marina is the meeting point. The drive from Liberia's airport or from Tamarindo can stretch behind trucks and tour vans in high season, so leave margin for pickup. Stays in Tamarindo, Brasilito, Hacienda Pinilla, Conchal, Flamingo, or at the Riu can use arranged transport rather than guessing parking at the dock.
Published half-day windows are 8:00 a.m. to noon and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; weekend dock times are not listed the same way everywhere, so set the exact meeting time when you reserve. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a light cover-up, polarized sunglasses, and whatever you already use for motion on the water. Before you book, it helps to know whether your date favors snorkeling or Papagayo sailing wind, whether the Bat Islands fit a four-hour run, how the current menu handles dietary needs, how fishing is balanced with swimming, and, for overnight trips, how the four cabins are assigned.
A private catamaran in this part of Guanacaste suits groups that want shade, a bathroom, a real meal, and several water activities on one outing, especially when Flamingo Marina is closer than a beach pickup in Tamarindo or Playas del Coco. Pacific Soul Sailing is organized around that marina base and a fully equipped Lagoon 450, which is the practical comparison point against smaller open boats working the same coastline.
