A Calle Mariposa table in Playa Potrero
Playa Potrero sits on a calm bay in Santa Cruz canton, Guanacaste, minutes from Flamingo and the Surfside stretch of Ruta 911. Restaurants Arenas is on Calle Mariposa in that same grid, a practical address if you are already walking inland from the sand or staying near Potrero Bay. Reach them at +506 8405 2960.
Listed plates are built for sharing. Ten chicken wings come with two sauces to choose, guacamole is served with chips, and mixed platters appear as surtido grande and surtido pequeño. A 1.5-liter Pepsi is on the same short list. Typical prices run 5,000 to 15,000 Costa Rican colones, a casual band for this part of the coast.
Dishes and prices you can plan around
Ten wings with two sauces are the clearest single order: enough for a snack after a swim or a starter for two. Guacamole and chips is the other named appetizer. Surtido platters on the Costa Rican coast are usually mixed plates for the table; the large and small sizes here let you scale for a pair or a bigger group. What actually lands on the surtido—meats, fried sides, cheese, tortillas—can change, so the useful question at the counter is simply what is in it today.
The 5,000–15,000 CRC range is the budget to carry in colones. That window typically covers a casual plate or a shared snack rather than a long tasting menu. The 1.5-liter soda is a hint that drinks are meant to be split the same way as the food, which suits sandy groups walking over from the bay.
Neighborhood kitchens in Potrero often cook more than the short list of named plates. If someone wants a full rice-and-protein plate instead of wings, say so when you arrive. The listed items still give you a reliable fallback: wings, guacamole, and a surtido in two sizes.
Getting there from the beach and Ruta 911
Calle Mariposa runs through the small-business and residential blocks behind Playa Potrero, in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste Province. The beach is the easiest landmark: a wide, calm bay used for swimming, paddleboarding, and walks toward Flamingo or back toward Surfside. From the water, you cut inland into the same street network as small hotels and neighborhood rooms.
Ruta 911 is the road that ties Brasilito, Surfside, Potrero, and Flamingo together. Drivers coming from Tamarindo or the Liberia corridor typically turn toward Flamingo and continue a few minutes into Potrero. Once you are in town, walking is the default. Many stays sit a short walk from restaurants, grocery, and coffee, and the bay itself is close enough that beach-to-table is a normal pattern rather than a project.
MerKdo supermarket at Centro Comercial Pacifico is the nearby grocery if you need water or fruit before you eat. Bahía del Sol Hotel, about two kilometers north of the Flamingo junction, is another orientation point. Hemingway's, Café del Sol, and coffee counters cluster along the Surfside–Potrero strip; Tandoor Indian Restaurant Potrero is on Calle 911. If you can find those, you are in the right grid for Calle Mariposa.
Panache Sailing's office sits on the main Flamingo–Potrero road, and a dive shop operates just south of Hemingway's. They sit on the same walking loop between the bay and dinner.
When to eat in Playa Potrero
Hours for Restaurants Arenas are published inconsistently. Saturday has been listed from noon to 11:30 p.m., and an 11:30 p.m. close appears elsewhere, while other weekday times do not match. Call +506 8405 2960 before you walk over, especially around midday, late evening, or public holidays.
The Guanacaste sun does more to set the schedule than a printed timetable. Mornings belong to the bay, when the water is kinder and the sand is still cool enough to cross. Lunch between noon and 2:00 p.m. is the indoor break most visitors want. Early dinner, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., catches cooler air and still leaves a window for sunset on the beach. Late tables work in this strip only if the kitchen is still open that night.
From December through April, and around Semana Santa, Flamingo and Potrero fill with visitors. For a large surtido, mention the headcount when you phone.
How to choose among Potrero's restaurants
Dining here is mixed on purpose. Tandoor covers Indian, Nita Coffee and Carpe Diem 2.0 cover coffee, Potrero Brewing Company and Lorito Brewhouse cover beer, Mangue sits closer to the water with tapas, and Hemingway's and The Shack are longer-running rooms on the same strip. Restaurants Arenas is the Calle Mariposa option with a low listed price band and shareable plates: wings, guacamole, and surtido.
Go there when the group wants those items without leaving the neighborhood, and when 5,000–15,000 CRC is the spend you have in mind. Walk to Tandoor, a brewery, or a beachfront table instead if that is already the craving.
At the door, keep the conversation short: sauces on the wings, contents of the surtido, whether a full plate is available, and how soon food can come out. Colones in the pocket and a charged phone are enough. Beachwear is normal after a swim. If anyone has a sailing pickup on the Flamingo–Potrero road or a drive back toward Liberia, eat on the early side of the evening.
Building a day around lunch or dinner
A simple Potrero day starts on the bay. Swim or walk Playa Potrero in the morning, then cut inland to Calle Mariposa when you are hungry. Wings and guacamole fit a post-beach share; the surtido grande is the better order if several people are ready for a real plate. Afterward you can continue to OH.TERRA Ceramics & Art Studio on Calle 911, restock at MerKdo, or roll on to Flamingo for the marina afternoon.
If dinner is the anchor, spend the day farther out—Conchal, a sail, or time in the water—then return to Potrero in the evening. Calle Mariposa is inside the residential grid, so you are not competing with marina lots. Arrive on the early side of evening if the group is hungry.
Families in the small hotels and gated complexes behind the beach often walk to dinner. People driving from Flamingo can use this address as a lower-key stop than the marina row. Groups splitting the bill will care about the large surtido and the 1.5-liter soda.
Playa Potrero rewards a local loop: bay, shade, a plate in the 5,000–15,000 CRC range, and a short walk home. Restaurants Arenas is one of the Calle Mariposa addresses that fits that loop when the listed plates match the group.
