Rocket Frog Divers has run Pacific diving in Costa Rica since 2011. The Playa Flamingo shop stands at Flamingo Beach Resort and Spa in Guanacaste, on the northern Pacific coast. From that base, boat days go to the Catalina Islands, the Bat Islands, and the Gulf de Papagayo. Distance, conditions, and the animals linked to each area are not the same, so the region shapes the day before any other detail does.

The shop is a PADI 5-star Instructor Development Centre. Certified instructors in Playa Flamingo teach from a first breath underwater through Divemaster. Nitrox is offered. From Ocotal to two Pacific bases

The first shop opened in Playa Ocotal in 2011 and drew people for Gulf de Papagayo diving as well as longer runs to the Catalinas and the Bat Islands. By December 2016 the business had outgrown that space and moved into a larger shop. That setup brought a bigger pool for training, accommodation options for divers, and a more comfortable place to gear up. The December move came before Flamingo opened.

Expansion to Playa Flamingo started in the fall of 2017, both to serve more people and to put local Catalinas diving within easier reach. The base inside Flamingo Beach Resort and Spa is also used to start new divers. People who are not staying in Flamingo can dive with the same operation out of Playas del Coco. The resort address and the Coco departure are different meeting points, so the start of the day belongs in the plan.

Catalina Islands

The Catalinas are the closest dive region to Playa Flamingo and the main dry-season chance at a Pacific giant manta. Those mantas are most common from late December into May. Roughly December through May is the window to favor when a manta is the reason for the trip. Big schools of fish, rays, and turtles belong to the same region, so a Catalinas day is broader than a search for one animal.

This area suits a much wider range of experience than the Bat Islands. A certified diver can join a day trip. Someone still new in the ocean can be matched here rather than on a site built around current and surge. A manta remains a seasonal chance, not an appearance set to the clock.

Bat Islands and Big Scare

The Bat Islands sit inside a protected marine area off Santa Rosa National Park. Big Scare is the site linked to bull sharks holding in the current. Schools of mobula rays and cownose rays at the islands have been known to run into the thousands. The shop treats the trip as advanced only. Strong currents and surge make it unsuitable for new divers, which is why it stands apart from the other two areas.

The Pacific Express is the boat named for this crossing, about 45 to 50 minutes, and under half the time of most boats on the same run. The shop states that it runs Bat Islands trips all year, conditions permitting, and presents that year-round access as unlike other local shops. Water there runs warmer. June through November, the green season, is usually the better period for this area.

Gulf de Papagayo

Gulf de Papagayo is the everyday reef: eagle rays, octopus, clown shrimp, reef sharks, and more. It is open to every level, and conditions change from day to day. No two dives are described as looking quite the same. A first ocean dive with an instructor fits this water, as does a varied day for someone who already holds a certification and does not need a long advanced crossing.

Closer to home, this coast is associated with turtles, octopus, morays, white-tip reef sharks, and clouds of fish. The rule given for that life is to look and not to touch. A little distance from the reef, with fins kept off the bottom, is a sound way to watch without disturbing what is there.

Courses, nitrox, and waivers

A person who has never breathed underwater can start with Discover Scuba Diving and stay with an instructor in the water. Open Water is the course that leads to full certification. The ladder then includes Advanced Open Water, Emergency First Aid, Rescue Diver, and a Divemaster internship, taught by certified instructors in Playa Flamingo. An already certified diver can go straight onto a boat day.

Nitrox is available with the trips and courses. In general, enriched air is its own qualification, separate from a basic card, and it does not stand in for the current experience an advanced site expects. English and Spanish dive waivers, matching liability releases, and a snorkel waiver are set out for completion before anyone enters the water.

Water and the boats

Visibility along this Guanacaste coast can pass 80 feet on a clear day and fall to about 15 feet on a poor one, sometimes with little notice. Thermoclines are common, so temperature can change during a single dive. A 3mm full wetsuit is the suggestion for the whole year, including mornings when the air and the surface feel warm enough for less neoprene.

Boats are described as purpose-built and dive-ready, with the aim of more time underwater and less time on the ride. The Pacific Express is the fast boat tied to the Bat Islands run. Diving is offered in every month. Which area fits still follows the season already tied to mantas or to the islands, plus the conditions on the day itself.

Where the day starts

The Flamingo meeting place is Flamingo Beach Resort and Spa, with the daily window running from 8:00 to 18:00. If the stay is elsewhere on this coast, Playas del Coco is the other arranged start. Naming that departure when the day is set avoids a drive to the wrong beach. Two Pacific locations are how the operation is organized, not two names for one dock.

The shop invites people to share the dates they are in town and what they hope to see, whether mantas, bull sharks, or a reef day, so the outing can be shaped around that aim. Longer crossings still depend on conditions. A flexible day is more useful than a single locked hour on the water, especially when the plan reaches the islands rather than the nearer reef.
