The Shack

Restaurant in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

The Shack is a restaurant and bar on Calle Principal in Surfside, the midtown stretch of Playa Potrero in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste. It serves typical Costa Rican and North American dishes for breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner, with hot coffee, cold beer, specialty drinks, and outdoor seating. Sunday through Friday are the dining days; Saturday is closed.

Finding The Shack in Surfside

Surfside sits just inland from Playa Potrero's beach, close enough that breakfast or dinner here can sit on either side of time on the sand. The restaurant is on the main street, about 200 meters east of Hotel Bahia del Sol, in the midtown block between Bahia del Sol and Perlas, on Calle Principal between the Castle and Avenida Tres. Street parking is available, and parking is available at the restaurant.

Potrero is a quieter bay town than Tamarindo and more spread out than Flamingo's marina strip. Calle Principal is the street you actually use: hotels, a handful of restaurants, and the turns down toward the water. Drivers coming from Liberia usually reach Potrero after Huacas and Brasilito. From Flamingo the hop is short; from Tamarindo it is a longer coastal run through the same towns. Taxis serve the Flamingo-Potrero corridor. If you will be out after dark, set up the ride back when you arrive so you are not standing on Calle Principal looking for a car.

Costa Rican plates, American cooking, and the bar

The kitchen serves typical Costa Rican food alongside North American dishes. Casados, the plate of rice, beans, salad, and a protein that shows up across Guanacaste, sit on that menu, which helps when a table wants both a local lunch and something more familiar. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available.

Breakfast has its own menu. Lunch and dinner come from the main menu. Both are offered in English and Spanish. Mornings revolve around coffee and breakfast plates; later the bar carries as much weight as the kitchen, with cold beer, specialty drinks, and outdoor tables. Nightly specials change, so ask what is running that evening if you want the kitchen's current plate rather than a standard order.

This is a community restaurant, not a hotel dining room. The outdoor space is there for eating and lingering in the open air. In the dry months that means heat and dust on the main street; from May into November, afternoon rain is common, and an earlier meal or a take-out order is the easy adjustment.

Live music, Saturday closing, and evening hours

Wednesday is live-music night. Other music dates show up on the restaurant's Facebook page, so a band can appear even if you miss Wednesday. If music is the point, make dinner the plan for that night instead of squeezing in a short stop.

Saturday is closed. If Saturday is your only night in Potrero, eat somewhere else and come back Sunday. Sunday through Friday, the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Plan to eat earlier in the evening. If you will arrive late, phone +506 2654-6038 to see whether the kitchen is still serving. Use that number as well for specials, event nights, and take-out.

Dine-in, take-out, and paying

Eat on site if you want the outdoor tables and the bar. For food back at a rental or hotel, call +506 2654-6038 and pick up when the order is ready. Mastercard and Visa are accepted, which simplifies the bill if you are not carrying many colones. Keep some cash anyway for taxis and small shops around Surfside.

If you need vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free cooking, say so when you order. Those options are already part of the menu, and it is faster to start there than to rewrite a plate after it is made. For take-out, give a pickup window so you are not circling Calle Principal.

Fitting The Shack into a day in Playa Potrero

Playa Potrero's bay is the reason most people stay here: a long beach, usually calmer water than the open Pacific breaks to the south, and a short hop to Flamingo for boats and a busier evening. A useful day is an early swim or walk, shade through the hot hours, then food and a drink when the light drops. A Surfside restaurant that opens for breakfast and continues through dinner matches that pace without a drive to Tamarindo.

Breakfast works before a boat out of Flamingo or a morning on the sand. Lunch works when you come off the beach hungry and want a casado and a cold drink. Dinner works when you would rather stay in Potrero than cross to Flamingo. Wednesday adds live music. Saturday takes the restaurant out of the plan.

When you choose among Potrero kitchens, start with setting. Hotel restaurants on the bay are convenient if you are already staying there. Beach sodas put you next to the water but often have a shorter bar and fewer hours. A main-street restaurant with Costa Rican and American dishes, coffee in the morning, beer at night, outdoor tables, and take-out covers more of a week, especially when a group splits between local plates and North American ones.

Keep the questions short. Is the kitchen still serving if we arrive after 8:30 p.m.? What is tonight's special? Can this be made vegetarian or gluten-free? How long will take-out take? Is there music this Wednesday? That is enough to plan around.

Wear beach-town clothes that still work at a main-street table. Drivers should use Hotel Bahia del Sol as the landmark and continue about 200 meters east on Calle Principal. Walkers coming up from the sand should allow extra time in the afternoon heat. The Shack's place in a stay is a Surfside table for Costa Rican and North American food, drinks, Wednesday music, and take-out, with Saturday off. Put +506 2654-6038 in your phone, skip Saturday, and use breakfast or dinner here as the pause between the bay and the rest of Guanacaste.
